Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled Intermediate Site Development Engineer to join our interdisciplinary design team, provide technical expertise, design, and manage projects within the site development practice, focused on the Calgary Region. The work involves hands-on design and construction inspection activities associated with our residential, industrial, institutional, and commercial site development projects. You will be responsible for preliminary & detailed design, construction administration, and working with architects and other specialty consultants. Your role will be pivotal to support our site development clients & architects and maintain momentum on projects of varying size and complexity through the design and construction process. Commitment to continuous improvement and excellent client service are fundamental. This position includes the opportunity to grow into responsibility for proposal writing, client management, and project financial management.

Key Responsibilities:
Project Management:
Manage project scope, timeline, budget, resourcing, and deliverables, while effectively communicating with the project team (including architects & other consultants) and clients.

Technical Guidance & Expertise:
  • Prepare & coordinate preliminary designs, detailed design, detailed calculations, engineering specifications, and cost estimates for site development projects.
  • Prepare schematic design & design development reports for the Civil engineering scope of work.
  • Attend in-person and virtual project meetings with the architect, other consultants, and clients.
  • Undertake the preparation of sanitary reports, stormwater management reports, and erosion & sediment control reports & drawings.
  • Coordinate and monitor construction activities, construction & ESC inspections, QA/QC testing and reporting, regulatory compliance, and post-construction activities.
  • Provide clients with proactive, cost-effective, long-term solutions.
  • Coordinate DSSP submissions, respond to comments, and liaise with municipal staff related to design reviews, challenging designs, construction and post-construction issues, and project close-out.

Mentoring and Training: Provide mentorship to junior staff and coop students and embrace mentorship from senior staff.

Business Development: Maintain and grow positive relationships with existing architects and clients.

Professional Development: Pursue ongoing education and training.

Location:
  • This position is in Calgary, Alberta.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering or a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology.
  • Professional membership in APEGA with a P.Eng. or P.L.(Eng.) designation. Professional membership in ASET with a C.E.T designation will also be considered, with adjustments in job duties and title to ensure compliance with the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act.
  • A minimum of two years of site development experience, from preliminary design to construction completion, with preference given to candidates with more experience.
  • Strong technical skills in site development (DSSP) design, including grading, underground utility design, small site stormwater management, and surface improvement design.
  • Experience with stormwater management report writing, including modelling with PCSWWM, XPSTORM, SWMHYMO, or City of Calgary Water Balance Spreadsheet is considered an asset.
  • Experience with sediment & erosion control design and construction monitoring, including CPESC accreditation, is considered an asset.
  • MS Office skills, specifically the ability to work with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, including knowledge and skills working with PDF editor software.
  • Proficient with ACAD and Civil 3D.
  • Familiarity with the DSSP approval process.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with clients, architects, other consultants, contractors, and internal team members.
  • Ability to prioritize and work under pressure to meet project deadlines.
  • Relevant experience with the City of Calgary, Rocky View County, and other Alberta municipalities is considered an asset.
  • Supply their own reliable vehicle and have a valid driver’s license.

Reporting Structure:
  • Reports to the Manager, Site Development
