Water Resource Engineer

Job Description

You are a Water Resource Engineer with a passion for stormwater management. You will work collaboratively within the Urban Design and Renewal practice to support development and delivery of impactful projects. This is a technical role where you will be engaged in developing stormwater runoff analysis, conveyance system design, storm water management facility (SWMF) design, low impact development (LID) design, lot grading (surface drainage) design, and asset management using GIS.
You will play a key role in developing and delivering drainage and multi-discipline projects that consider climate change, infrastructure resiliency and place making. The water resource engineering practice is constantly evolving. Your desire to continuously improve and enhance drainage infrastructure will help Al-Terra achieve our purpose in getting people where they need to go and creating places where they want to be.

Responsibilities

  • Complete drainage analysis or modeling using computer simulated methods.
  • Map and complete spatial analysis using GIS.
  • Design drainage and water infrastructure including culverts, stormwater management facilities, stormwater conveyance systems, LID systems, outfalls, surface drainage (grading), erosion control, sanitary & combined sewers, and watermain & fire protection networks.
  • Conduct site visits as necessary.
  • Support multi-disciplinary projects such as: transportation, land and site development, urban renewal, and landscaping.
  • Participate in project development and delivery from concept design to construction.
  • Respond to internal and external client inquiries or requests in a timely manner.
  • Author and present technical documents, including reports, memos, design briefs & drawings, to clients, regulatory agencies, and the public.
  • Coordinate projects to ensure successful completion on time and on budget.
  • Stay up to date on technologies, regulations, and industry trends related to water resource engineering, and apply relevant knowledge to projects.
  • Participate in professional organizations and networks related to water resource engineering to stay informed about developments in the field.
  • Participate in proposal writing and preparation

 Requirements

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer with APEGA.
  • 4–10 years of experience in drainage design & construction
  • Experienced with Mike+ as well as other computer analysis and simulation software such as: HEC-RAS, PCSWMM, XPSTORM, MIKE Urban, MIKE 21, and WaterCAD.
  • A graduate degree and/or drainage education or training focus, is considered an asset
  • Own a dependable vehicle and licensed to operate a vehicle in Alberta
  • Ability to pass background check

Qualifications

  • Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Proficient with AutoCAD and Civil 3D
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite of products
  • Experience with Google Workspace
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Desire for continuous improvement
  • Self-motivated, collaborative, adaptable, and able to support the team with multiple projects all at different phases of the project life cycle with competing deadlines and priorities.

Working Conditions

  • Full Time 40 hours per week
  • As a designer, you will collaborate with project managers, practice leads and other project team members to complete deliverables on time and on budget. You may participate in client meetings as required to realize project objectives and be on-site during construction to help implement your designs.
  • Our team works primarily full-time from our office. However, we prioritize employee satisfaction and work-life balance. When possible, we can offer remote working options and flexible hours. These options are subject to workload, departmental needs, and their impact on the team. 
  • Occasional travel and overtime, including weekends, may be required.

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to navigate uneven landscapes
  • Work at a desk for extended periods of time
